This song has come to mean a lot to me lately. I have come to find a lot of myself in these lyrics. How many times do we push things that we don't understand away and classify it as "weird" or "liberal" or "conservative" or.... Read the lyrics with an open heart.
You find this situation just a bit uncomfortable;

Claiming there is a God, but does that mean anything?
So condescending to those that you don't understand;

Jesus refers to this human condition several times. Most directly when he says, "Remove the plank from your own eyes before you start to try to remove the splinter from your brother's eye."
It's so much easier to judge others, their culture and their sins (and gossip about them,) than to face our own.
I'm quite sure Jesus looks upon us with tears in His eyes, and sadness in his heart that after all these 2009 years since he handed the keys to His Kingdom to Peter, we, as Christians, not only attack non Christians, but attack other Christians. Instead of standing shoulder to shoulder, looking in the same direction despite our cultural and doctrinal differences, and working in the world for His sake, not our own. It has not changed much since the jews of His time and to whom He taught and called vipers and hypocrites, but, we still don't listen without difficulty in hearing His message.
Excellent comment 'anonymous'. This is why I love this song, it reminds me that Jesus didn't want divisions and fighting amongst Christians.. we have a much bigger battle to fight. I frequently forget this and need this reminder...
